Debate

Today in school we had a debate about Frank Groff, the Bridgeport General.  In order to do this I needed to learn about debate preparation.  One thing I had to learn about was asking questions.  In order to find more information, you need to ask questions about the opposition’s opinion.  You also need a person to respond to questions that your team is asked.  For people to know about your opinion, you need an opening and closing statement.  You also need to think about the opposition’s opinions so you know what they might ask you.  The format of a debate includes a lot of things, but it is still pretty easy to learn.

Although I learned a lot about the format of a debate, that’s not all I learned about a debate.  Debating requires a lot of preparation and happens when people don’t agree about an issue.  If you think debates are easy, you’re wrong!  They require careful planning and listening. To respond to a question, you need to plan your thoughts on what their opinion is.  All of these things can help me in the real world.  It could help me when I’m arguing with somebody or if I’m in a real debate.  I guess I learned more than I realized.

Jarret is a grade four student who likes skiing, math and science.  He wants to be an engineer when he grows up.
